5 ⭐️, until the last 10%, where it went off on a tangent. Definitely not a thriller, as advertised, but more an exploration into the power people who have more money than sense have.

I am glad I was able to read this book that has been on my TBR forever!
I remember when it was released I saw a mix of reviews and I didn’t want to have it affect my decisions on how I read this.
This was a MeToo movement book with a slight spin. The MC was a first year associate lawyer for a prestigious law firm who never swayed from a challenge. She was smart, fierce and beautiful. Of course, the partners took advantage of her beauty and her willingness to get ahead by basically creating a rivalry between her and her best friends to become one of the few female members of the laws M&A placement.
The story was as realistic as it comes and it’s a disgrace how woman and other minorities are displayed in the corporate field as shining stars to make the quota.
I was able to read and listen together and Julia Whelen was a spectacular narrator like always making this one shine.

I like legal thrillers (using thriller very loosely for this book) and Katz did a great job setting up a lot of webs that had me turning the pages wondering how it would all explode and eventually resolve. But the ending just fizzled out and I was really let down by how it all wrapped up. It could have been so much better.

I really liked the book. I will say about 75% of the way through like s*it got real but it’s real issues that happen in corporate America. It’s a good mixture of a light read but definitely has some feminist undertones which I liked.
Graphic: Infidelity, Sexual assault, Suicidal thoughts, Toxic relationship, Toxic friendship, and Sexual harassment

Meh. I generally enjoyed this novel until the last third or so, but the self-righteous turn at the end just felt hollow and too pat. The portrayal of Alex’s clearly upper middle class family drove me bananas with her repeatedly acting like a family of three just managed with an oncologist’s salary.
What really just left a bad taste was the pseudonymous author’s bio, especially in light of the ending. Perhaps that’s a bit judgmental, the end was so self-congratulatory with #girlboss vibes.
