A reread that I first read a decade ago, this still felt modern as both an exhilarating thriller and a social commentary. I think I loved it more the second time around.

I had started this book several times in print and just couldn't get into it. My audio book ended on a trip and this was next up. It does start slow, but BOY is it worth it. Fascinating story about a murder on a remote island off Sweden, centered around a tangled family history and an author who has just gone through a tough time himself. Add in a quiet, still-waters-run-deep, amazing hacker gal, and you've got a heck of a story. I immediately started the next book.

First off...WOW. This book was not what I was expecting at all. I knew it was a widely popular book but had no idea what the story was about. But, I thought I'd give it a try and see what all the hype was about.

When I first started, I was having a rough time with the language, lack of editing, and the million Swedish characters introduced. I really struggled with getting into the book, but I am one to always finish a book no matter what, so I marched on.

I am so glad I stuck it out, because about halfway through the book the tempo picked up and the story got so engaging that I couldn't put it down! I think it took me a day to read the last half of the book, whereas the first half took about 4 days. I had no idea how the ending was going to turn out, or if Blomkvist could really solve the 40-year-old disappearance. And I certainly wasn't expecting the outcome (no worries, I won't spoil!) My favorite character was Salander by far, and I hope the second and third books delve into her past more.

This is definitely a must-read book if you are into mystery, suspense, dark humor, and a little romance mixed in.

I finally read it!! And, what's more, I read it on a Kindle. This worked out very well for several reasons: 1) it was lightweight and I wasn't aware how long it was, or I might have given up in the beginning; 2) all you have to do is put the cursor at an unfamiliar word and the definition will appear, i.e. "haberdashery" (fabric store) -- this is a GREAT feature; 3) I could keyword-search the book if I was curious. In this case I was, about coffee. PEOPLE DRANK MORE COFFEE IN THIS BOOK THAN I COULD FATHOM. "Coffee" appears 117 times, if you're curious. That still seems low to me.

As others have said, this book starts out slow but really grabs hold. After I passed the halfway point, I was reading it with heart literally pounding. It takes a lot for a book to provoke a physical reaction, I think; in this case, a many-layered mystery, well-built suspense, and some truly horrifying violence (beware). I find myself eager to read the next book and see the movie. I also will spend awhile thinking about what I read in another Goodreads review: that the Swedish name for this book is "Men Who Hate Women." Gives it a whole different spin than centering it around Lisbeth Salander via the title, doesn't it?

Finally read after all the hype. Excellent character development and mystery. However, once mystery is solved book went on to long.

Slow to start but once you get past the first 20-30 pages you become apart of this depressingly violent mystery.
