Heller’s books meander like a river with intrigue thrown in. I love his characters and lyrical writing but somehow this book ended up feeling unfinished which tells me there may be a future book with Ren Hopper.

I liked so much of this book. The outdoor writing was phenomenal, and at first the main character was really intriguing. But then it became clear that there wasn’t much  of a mystery, all sorts of interesting plot points were introduced and then abandoned, and possible the worst, most unintentionally awkward romance I have ever read happened and kept happening. Truly, I had to skim those descriptions because I was embarrassed for everyone involved.

It is very well written. I felt that the plot was a little jumpy and didn’t resolve the panthers interaction or imitation of the newest member. Otherwise it was very good.

Heller is one of those authors that I will read anything by with the surety it will be well written. I really enjoyed this build up of a book about Yellowstone, wolves, a park ranger and the clash with humans.

For a short book, this felt very long.

I loved the stories about the wolves, I love the nature, the way is described, enjoyed, cherished and sometimes worshiped.

I did not enjoy the fact that the book was mainly negative. Negative internal chatter, all the tourists presented were idiots, there is too much drama, insecurity, thoughts and thoughts and thoughts that sum up to a "im not good enough" explored in every way and from every angle.

3.5 stars but rounding up because the Lamar Valley is one of my favorite places on this beautiful planet. This one was a little slow until it wasn’t - and then it rushed to a somewhat unsatisfying end. But this whole book felt amazingly atmospheric, and not just because of Heller’s superb nature writing. For me, the way Heller presents Ren’s contemplation of his past and present felt true to way it memories arise and flit away and we process the emotions tied to those experiences.
