The Five Realms expands to the far North when the bard and his apprentice are drawn up over the mountains to 'The Empire'. It contains a multitude of cultures and a shattered doomsday cult that may yet have the last word....

I wasn't sure how much connection there was going to be between the 'Podkin' and 'Uki' trilogies. I'm happy to report that the connection is seamless. The 'present' storyline picks up where 'Beasts of Grimheart' left off, with the bard and his apprentice continuing their journey. Along the way, the story of Uki and his companions is told. The story is in many ways darker than the 'Longburrow', with Uki's grief for his mother being an integral piece. The suffering of others at the hands of the malignant spirits is also more realistic. There is plenty of humor, however, as Uki quickly meets and befriends an outcast plains rabbit and his steed, and a trained assassin who refuses to kill.

This is a great adventure series and well worth special ordering if you're in the United States. They have not been printed over here - and may not be for some time due to current events. The books have great writing and beautiful interior illustrations. The UK editions, however, do have bad CG covers, but don't let that deter you. These are so much fun to read.

Five Realms

Next: 'Uki and the Swamp Spirit'

Previous: 'The Beasts of Grimheart' (Longburrow)
