Sorcery of Thorns has been on my shelf since it was released, this was definitely a cover buy for me. I was instantly drawn in to it and subsequently I was in Foyle's one day and bought it on impulse without really knowing anything about it. I found that after buying it, I didn't really hear much more about this book so it kind of just got left on my shelf. Until recently, when I started to hear more things about it and thought I would pick it up in the month of April.
I feel really let down guys. I had such high hopes for this book. The plot really interested me, a book about magical books and necromancy. What more do I need from a book? Clearly more, because this did not get me in the way I wanted it to. By absolutely no means was it a bad book in any way. It was a good book, it just wasn't for me and I'm still not entirely sure why.
I've had a whole day of reading so my intention was always to pick this book up and also finish it in the same day. I succeeded with doing that. Whilst I was reading it I found that I didn't want to put it down, but when I did put it down I didn't want to pick it back up again. It took a lot of willpower to do it, and the only reason I did is because I had heard how good it was. I started to question whether i just needed to give it a little bit more time before I fell in love with it and I just didn't.
I found it really difficult to get into, I didn't get on with the writing style at all. I dont feel like the prose drew me in to the point where I flew through the book which is something I enjoy discovering in YA fantasy. The characters were okay - I liked them but I didn't love them. The issue I had is I could not build up a connection to them so I just felt like I didn't really care about them and what happened to them. Therefore, the action, the plot twists and the romances just didn't really effect me. I didn't really care.
I don't really know what else to say apart from I am disappointed. There is nothing wrong with this book and I understand why people love it. I just didn't get on with it very well. I know this is a stand-alone but I don't think I will be looking to pick up anything further by this author. Through reading other reviews this is definitely an unpopular opinion, please don't hurt me!

A book about sorcerers, magic, Great Libraries, grimoires that actually talk and turn into monsters when provoked. Is there a book dragon alive who can resist such a story? I couldn’t. The plot is remarkable with its original concept and all the many twists that kept me on my toes. I loved how every time things seemed to settle in this book only to blow up worse. I can’t wait to read more of her works
