I used to follow Michelle Lam on Instagram for ages, so I was stoked to see that she was coming out with a graphic novel series! Needless to say, I enjoyed the art style here. The backgrounds were a little basic but she really excelled at character design. Unfortunately, however, I didn’t enjoy this story enough overall to want to continue with the series.

The plot was too cookie-cutter and the world-building lacked depth. Neither was bad, but neither was enough to be engaging. There was also some character inconsistencies. l I found it odd that Xavier went from being a bully to someone Meesh treated as a friend in a matter of moments. Similarly, Nouna’s switch from “fairies have done nothing wrong ever” to “we’ve behaved poorly” was very sudden.

There were a couple positives! Meesh’s character development was one of the better parts - from hating being a demon to embracing it by learning about what being a demon actually means. I also thought the initial exploration of the sanitisation of history was good, as was showing how oppressed groups aren’t worse off because of who they are, but because of their oppressors.
