“Well, I figure if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one.”

This hilarious, hair raising tale is another alternative history from Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows & Brodi Ashton. My Calamity Jane follows Annie Oakley, Frank Butler, Wild Bill Hickok & {you guessed it} Calamity Jane as they perform publicity in Wild Bill’s Traveling Show and privately hunt garou {aka werewolves}

After Jane is bitten in action the group hightail it to Deadwood in search of “the cure” but what they find packs a more heat than any of them can carry alone.

Once again, I love love love this series. They are as smart and funny as they are unique and original, and they also sound great on audio. Another brilliant read/listen from this trio, I cannot recommend them enough!

“When a man hits a target, they call him a marksman. When I hit it, they call it a trick. Never did like that much.”

This book could’ve easily been 200 pages shorter than what it was. I liked this re-imagining series; they are feminist, funny, and they also tap into a history that is unknown to me. And knowing that it is YA, I, unfortunately, don’t expect it to blow me away. My favourite from the series was My Lady Jane . Although, even that book became a chore real quick. The jokes faded, and having read all three books in the series, I can say with certainty that the plot of these books are very standard — the same insta-lovey love interests, bland characters that are supposed to break stereotypes, the talkative one, the bold one, the most loved one; you get the gist. The jokes in this one were far and few between, and instead the asides that were for comical effect in the other two books, sounded so preachy.

I liked that the authors didn’t overlook forgotten histories of the indigenous people, Calamity Jane’s very dominant gender bending and dressing sense, and among other things, the white supremacy. There is even a lgbtq+ character, which was amazing. However, the characters alone cannot run a comedic story, the plot also has to make sense. I know that the author’s are starting a Mary Series, so I just hope they take the criticism and improve on it in the upcoming books.

One general grievance that I have from YA is that the narration and the storyline is altered so much that it doesn’t make sense for a young adult reader. It suits more for preteens and middle grade. I feel like young adults, especially now, are a bit more mature to handle more stringent and dark themes (like loss of a loved one, loss of a culture, the violence that came with erasing said culture, generally death and dystopian themes — doesn’t have to be too extreme) that actually makes them think. This isn’t a complain from this book in particular, but generally from YA fantasy. I don’t mean to add adult themes like extreme sex and violence, but I mean other less darker concepts can be taken as accepted risks.

It was a tad too long, but I really enjoyed it still. Its fun, surprising and an original twist to history.

Fast and simple read. It wasn't as good as the first book, only laughed out loud once, but it was still just fun.
I liked the characters, kind of guessed the little 'twist' that played out at the end, but as I said, I still did like it.

The first was good, the second boring, and the third is a mess.

I love [b:My Lady Jane|22840421|My Lady Jane (The Lady Janies, #1)|Cynthia Hand|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1444923765l/22840421._SY75_.jpg|42397220] and I hoped the boring second book was just a fluke. Not so. My Calamity Jane is really about Annie Oakley, then about halfway through turns into an HBO Deadwood fanfiction.

Things happen to Calamity Jane and then she makes poor choices that kinda add drama, but not really. Annie Oakley has all the character growth and the call to adventure that should have been Jane's. Even Jane's love story, which I wanted to like, was stifled and poorly written. Jane and Winnie weren't given a chance.

As for the writing, the modern phrases and pop culture references felt forced. The comedy felt forced.

Overall, every aspect of the book was disappointing.

A western, but with werewolves and lesbians and pure comedy gold, along with appearances from dime novel authors?
