Sometimes it's not about the destination so much as the point in the journey when you decide to pack it in and go home.

Funny, but I got bored at some parts. I share the sentiments of the three gentlemen at the end of the trip: It was an enjoyable experience (at times), but I am glad it is over.

A refreshingly enjoyable book. Full of laugh-out-loud humor, without being even a bit crude or cheesy. An ageless price of writing, highly recommended for someone looking for a light read.

Three men, george, harris, the narrator and montmorency start out ona river boat cruise, along the way the narrator hgihlights humourous encounters they have on their current and past trips, including getting lost on the way back to the boat, angering a german singer by laughing at his song, perils of hanging up a picture, etc
Funny book, didn't quite get the humour and thought it was going to detail a hypochondriac, but surprsingly freshly written with modern prose. The intro did a great deal in helping understand what it was going for

You know that friend of yours who tells these elaborate, serpentine, ever so slightly exaggerated stories which keep branching off into side-stories (this reminds me of that time when...) and off-hand philosophical remarks about life in general? That is what this book is like. It's the story of three friends (and dog) who take a trip up the river, and it's told in the cheeriest possible manner that puts a smile on your face with every word.
If I haven't convinced you yet, here's Jerome's sell (from the preface to the 1st edition):
If I haven't convinced you yet, here's Jerome's sell (from the preface to the 1st edition):
The chief beauty of this book lies not so much in its literary style, or in the extent and usefulness of the information it conveys, as its simple truthfulness. Its pages form the record of events that really happened. All that has been done is to colour them; and, for this, no extra charge has been made. George, Harris, and Montmorency are not poetic ideals, but things of flesh and blood - especially George who weighs about twelve stone. Other works may excel in depth of thought and knowledge of human nature: other books may rival it in originality and size; but, for hopeless and incurable veracity, nothing yet discovered can surpass it. This, more than all its other charms, will, it is felt, make the volume precious in the eye of the earnest reader; and will lend additional weight to the lesson that the story teaches.

This book was just pathetic!!! Neither humour nor the story was appealing. This book barely had any moment or episode which made me smile, let alone laugh. I literally started doubting my sense of humour while reading. The best part was the last chapter, as my mind started experiencing peace over the fact that the book is about to end, finally. My lack of knowledge on English history was another factor which spoiled my experience to even understand what was happening. Huge disappointment. I won't recommend this to anyone.
