1,000th book cataloged on GR! I wanted to read more about labor rights after Kirsten Hannah's Fourth Wind, so I picked this one up. What I didn't know is that it's set in Spokane, WA and the surrounding area, 2 hours from my home! While the use of antiquated language around people groups was obnoxious, I did love the discussion of various POVs on unions.

The Dolan brothers are orphans, looking for day work at the turn of the 20th Century. They become labor organizers and get tangled with a union busting plot. Lots of intrigue and danger. Good exploration of class divide, wealth, poverty, and income inequality. While this is not the most racially diverse book, there is an indigenous/native character and plot line and conversation about the ways in which native people were expected to westernize and lose their language and culture. Two strong female characters were also well drawn. Many of the characters are well developed, complex and interesting. Even when they make disappointing choices, you understand why and root for many of them. Very, very well done.
Graphic: Gun violence and Violence
Moderate: Misogyny, Racial slurs, and Racism
