I have devoured Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell series and currently have no more to read of those works, so out of curiosity I picked up this modern, stand alone, novel. Older women attempting to retire from a lifetime of working as assassins was an intriguing plot prompt. Would Raybourn's characters end up being the Speedwell novels just in a different time and place?
I am happy to report, they are not! The tone and character development of the four main characters felt markedly different than her other series, and I actually felt that Raybourn's writing was more confident and well defined than in the Speedwell series. She typically writes historical time period characters, but a modern setting felt more comfortable and natural in this novel.
I would classify this as a cozy adventure read. There was plenty of peril and adventure, but for the most part there was not long periods of tension or impossibly high stakes. I truly enjoyed going along for the ride on this murdery - I mean, assassination-y? - adventure.
