Potentially triggering themes in the various stories. Stories written in a very gripping manner.

It was my first time reading a collection of short stories and my first horror book, and I found the experience quite enjoyable. Immersing myself in one story at a time was a unique experience, but some of the stories were so compelling that I couldn't resist reading more. It felt like a fantastic foray into the world of horror literature. Mariana Enriquez's writing style is captivating and enthralling, keeping me eagerly anticipating what would happen next with every page turn. Mariana Enriquez skillfully delves into a wide range of themes, including witchcraft, curses, trauma, and forbidden desires.
Among all the stories, "Meat" and "Kids Who Come Back" were my favorites. However, I should note that the stories can be pretty vile, so if you don't like that, you should probably avoid it. Overall, I would rate the collection 4 out of 5.

The Dangers of Smoking in Bed is a short story collection that falls firmly within the horror genre, which is probably my least favourite genre and something I'm unlikely to read unless committing to a reading challenge requires me to do so. The gore and body horror was stomach churning at times, but so too were the very real horrors that far too many women experience - rape, emotional abuse, and domestic violence, to name just a few. This book did get me thinking about the links between horror as a genre and real-life horrors. Using my (limited) knowledge of Argentinan history to consider the themes and messages of these stories definitely increased my appreciation of them. But I'm unlikely to become a horror fan any time soon.
