This was fun! Felt like a rom-com movie in written format.

I am here for the contemporary witchy romance boom. Seriously. Big fan.

Alex is a merman, Lucy is a teacher and tea leaf reading witch. When she casts a spell that makes her unable to turn down anything that will bring excitement to her life, she’s forced to spend more and more time together with Alex, who was her best friend in high school but left immediately after graduation for Dumb Man Reasons

A super cute romance set in a charming small town. This is a world where magic and paranormal beings come standard, and I loved the whole vibe. Perfect for spooky season.

I'm very much a Summer girl. Give me the long days, and all the sunshine. But I know many people are looking forward to the start of Autumn. Especially since Starbucks dropped their fall menu today. I'm not one of them.

Ready to dive into witchy reads, but it's still too hot outside? I've got the perfect book for you - WITCHFUL THINKING by Celestine Martin. It's the perfect week to pick up this novel, especially since something happens on August 30.

It's a novel that takes place during the summer in a city along the New Jersey Shore. Lucy is a witch that's fallen into a rut. Along with her two sisters, and cousin, they cast a wish spell hoping to change their lives. Alex is a merman that has trouble staying in one place, but returns home for his birthday.

It's friends to lovers (and maybe they've been strangers in the past years). With that slow burn angst of do I say something about my feelings? What will it take to keep the other?

It's also about going after what you want, and seeking out what you need. Wish fulfillment and fantasy.

When she is asked to submit an update of her life for her high school alumni newsletter, Lucy Caraway realizes that the blurb that she can write, based on her current life as a teacher and kitchen/green witch, isn't the blurb that she wishes she could write: an adventure seeking enchantress who is living her best life with her soulmate. With a little boost from a wishing spell she sends in a description of the person she wants to be, meaning that all she has to do before her reunion is make it the real thing. Lucy will dive out of her comfort zone headfirst, with the help of her old friend Alex Dwyer, the merman who got away. Alex, who usually has difficulty staying in one place due to his nomadic roots, comes back to town for his birthday, but has more trouble leaving the magical place he grew up in and the witch he left behind than he ever would have imagined.

I did this as a buddy read, and as people who partake in activities like tea leaf reading and tarot we definitely got the feeling that the writer practiced magic in her own life. While there were some things that were obviously more fantastical, there was a lot of real world magic as well.

This was such a fun read for the start of summer. The timeline started in May and went through the end of August and it included all of the wonderful settings of summer: the beach, the fair, the flea markets. There were also a lot of little details that the author included that really made the world come alive to me like how the Mer family loved treasure, and the tea bouquet that Lucy received.

Alex and Lucy were both very likeable and it was easy for the reader to understand the connection between them. Their relationship, even though it was between a witch and a merman felt believable and you really wanted them to get together in the end. There was also some nice spice sprinkled throughout. Always love a good tail scene.

My favorite part of the book other than the romance was Lucy's personal journey. The major theme of her trying to bring excitement into her life in a lot of small ways was very encouraging and magical in its own way and is a lesson that I hope I can personally take from this enchanting book!

The only reason that I deducted one star was that the writing felt a little unpolished in places but other than that it was the perfect summer read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, I couldn’t get enough of this book. I enjoyed every page! It’s a cozy, medium paced romance they has just the right amount of cheese. The  puns! Definitely would pick up again and I’m heading straight to see what else Celestine Martin has in store for me

I really loved the mix of mythology and magic in this novel. It was a cute quick read with unconventional characters and an ending that isn't completely resolved.
