Not his best and sometimes feels like a Murakami tribute but it’s still goooood

I had a hard time getting past the blatant and very off-putting appropriation of Japanese culture and mild sexism, which, unfortunately, is still sexism.
I should also note: I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is British, which thoroughly amplified the cultural appropriation issues.

Some really beautiful and inspiring sections in this, but there was just too much going on.

Intense, magnetic, occasionally impenetrable…but in a good way. Pure escapism, with heart & purpose.

I really didn't like this book. It's probably a bad book to read right off the heels of [b:Sunshine|8088|Sunshine|Robin McKinley|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1309203987s/8088.jpg|2321294], which irritated the hell out of me with its rambling, stream of consciousness info dump. This book is exactly the same, but add to it the snobbery of 'high literature' in the manner of [b:A Visit from the Goon Squad|7331435|A Visit from the Goon Squad|Jennifer Egan|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1356844046s/7331435.jpg|8975330] (another book I DESPISED).
Some of the prose was tolerable, but I mostly found it annoying. The walls of text are exhausting. He goes on for pages and pages without a single break, on and on and on about stuff that you can't bring yourself to care about. Nouns used as verbs. Adjectives that are so wild and colorful you find them pretentious.
Content wise: The yakuza storyline was so ridiculously nonsensical, especially held up against the banal and overdone tiredness of "looking for my long lost father" plot.
This was definitely not my kind of book. A crushing disappointment, after the highs of [b:Cloud Atlas|49628|Cloud Atlas|David Mitchell|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344305390s/49628.jpg|1871423]
