An emotional war story told through the perspective of a horse. A very good book for children in secondary school to tell the horrors of war in an age-appropriate manner. Some good visual discriptions, and an interesting concept for narrating a war story. But not enough time to grow attached to characters and sometimes it doesn't make a lot of sense as to where the characters are.

This book is utterly devastating. It's about a lot of things: war, friendship, grief, love... but it all comes together to make something beautiful. I cried so much reading this. Telling it from Joey's perspective rather than from a soldier's was a brilliant idea on Michael Morpurgo's side. He wanted to show the universal suffering of war, and he did. He demonstrated it perfectly.

This book was a book club read for me and it was okay. It definitely wasn't bad, but the plot wasn't as complex as I generally prefer. It sort of went in circles, the circles were interesting, but the fact that there were circles was annoying.

One additional star for the excellent audio drama production.
