I still love this book. It's short but great and to the point. It's darker and it shows that life isn't all sugar and sunshine and that bad things can happen to anyone at any time. They don't pick and choose who they happen to. I admire Sophia and her will to fight so much. She is a young girl, only 13 when she loses both of her legs but she is a fighter and she never gives up even when life deals her this horrible hand.
2019
A touching story about an African girl that lost everything. She loses her legs when she steps on the bomb along with her sister who sadly loses her life- she blames herself but in the end she moves on to live her own, indepenet life.

Read this book when I was a teenager and re-read it this year.
It's a beautiful book about a life turned upside down, survival, courage and strength.
It deals with a hard matter connected to children so read TW.

I am nearly always interested in books about different cultures, ever since I was a foreign student 40-some years ago. And this book is no exception. The main focus of the book was actually the land mines that are left in the wake of wars, and that is important, but the thing that drew me in were the family and friend interactions.

The story behind the book was amazing, but it just didn't have the effect it should have. I think a lot was lost in translation and it was written for a non-existant audience--13/14 year olds who couldn't read higher then a 7/8 year old level but accepted stronger themes. It was slow, boring and, to be really honest, I'd read worse.
