Spooky with lots of good prose, but there’s a lot of build up to and ending that just drops off to nothing. It feels unfinished, even 20 more pages could have really made it something special.

Goodreads just ate my review, but in short: weird, confusing gothic horror that mostly worked for me. The writing is beautiful (for example, the use of multiple narrators gives the novel the feel of a round). I’m not sure I really liked this book, and I can’t imagine myself rereading it, but it’s a good book.

I'm not going to do this book justice. You should know that right from the outset.

Miranda Silver lives with her family in a vast house on the cliffs of Dover. Generations of her female ancestors have dwelt within its walls, each of them inflicted with their own kind of madness. After the death of her mother, Miranda feels herself slipping away as well, and the house seems to be pulling her in.

This book was weird. It was unsettling. It was uncomfortable. I liked it so much.

It felt like Edgar Allen Poe and like Haruki Murakami and also like its own unique thing. I finished it while laying in bed late last night and couldn't sleep for over an hour because it left me so uneasy. It was delightful.

The story was wonderfully strange, but the writing was just wonderful. The transitions especially made my nerdy reader heart so happy. This was my first Helen Oyeyemi novel, but it won't be the last.

I just couldn't get into this book. It didn't have me wanting to pick it back up and days past between sittings. I reread the synopsis and read reviews and tried again. But it just wasnt for me
