It’s historical fiction which is very much allowed. The Liars’ gospel is very well written and does some interesting stuff with the idea of filling in the blanks in the story of Jesus.

(Also it’s literally called The Liars’ Gospel which might be a hint as to whether we are supposed to take what is written as fact.)

Four and a half stars. Engrossing, exhaustively researched. So much simultaneous sympathy and rage for the characters.

The first two chapters of this book were closer to a 4 or even 4.25, but the last two were a little boring in my opinion and that lowered my rating.

This book is hard to explain. Imagine if Jesus was a real man. One with parents and siblings, one who made mistakes and was hurt by his own hubris. Through the perspectives of characters with some connection to him we learn about what the region looks like under the occupation of the Romans, what happened when Jesus left his family, and why Judas made the decision to betray his closest friend.

Ugh Naomi Alderman does it again. The perspective! The contextualization! The characters!
