4.75

I tossed up on ranking this a 4.75 or 5 star, because this book just slays so goddamn hard and is one that fully sticks with you. BUT IS ALSO FULLY FRUSTRATING. Cat, just kill the guy FFS. Why Rodney? Also why did old mate get turned into a vamp. I wanted the end of the fight between Cat and Bones to go a bit more slay than that ngl; I wanted it to have a bit more of an oomph. I NEEED Bones' perspective on this.

Also Vlad is the girl bestie; and Spade is an icon. I love these characters; and wow does everything make a lot more sense on the 2nd proper reread.

2.5

Half-Vampire Cat Crawfield attempts to take a vacation from the life of violence and death with her vampire love Bones after the last gruesome battle against the rogue undead. Deciding on the city of lovers, Paris, they hope to enjoy all the delights of one another. And yet, there is opposition to Cat being with Bones. Gregor believes that Cat is rightfully his wife among the vampires.

This book gives plenty of backstory, lots of violence, and even a healthy dose of character development. But if I am being honest with this review, it was a sidestep along the overall story arc that I could have done without. I've read some of the novellas in this series that were better planned and were less necessary for the storyline. I felt like the cumulation of events that led to this story arc could have merged into something a little more interesting than a scorned megalomaniac masochistic vampire from the hidden past. Frost had put so much personality into nearly all of the previous characters who held so much page space that I was disappointed with Gregor and his allies.

The second big problem I had with this book is that it makes out Cat to be a weak-minded human versus the big bad vampire guys. Even with Bones being a petty tantrum-throwing man-child, the constant self-flogging that is revealed by Cat's inner thoughts was enough to make me consider DNFing this book. I really hope this is the last one that makes Cat out to be so weak when the first three books in the Night Hunter series gave Cat an equal share in the power as the world's only half-vampire living.

This book was too angsty for me.   I'm not a fan of cheating, miscommunication, and contrived arguments. I love Vlad.  I'm tired of Cat lying by omission. I'm not sure she deserves Bones. </ spoiler>
