this book was such a rollercoaster. there were the best of times, there were the worst of times. one thing you cannot say is that iglesias cannot write simple and poetic prose. there were several moments of beauty where i could relish in the abilities of iglesias. but mario
as a character was simply unbearable. i felt like iglesias could have done a better job at making him LIKABLE, which would have easily made this book a 4 star or higher.

other than that, i enjoyed the ride even if it was a bit bumpy.

The desperation and bad decisions of Breaking Bad meets the creepy supernatural vibe of The X-Files meets the slow burn storytelling with political commentary of Silvia Moreno-Garcia... which is just to say this was right up my alley. This is definitely genre bending- some noir, horror, and thriller. Some of those scenes were so gruesome I would be covering my eyes for them if it was a movie, so now I am still waiting for them to leave my brain haha, so definitely not for those that don't like a bit of gore.

This book is not for the faint of heart!! Graphic and gory and overall disturbing, this is not a light read. Nevertheless, it is beautifully written with both poetic prose and highly sympathetic insights into one grieving and deeply troubled man's psyche (a tall feat, considering the acts that this man commits throughout the book).

I really enjoyed the style of the prose, how it feels Mario is talking directly to you. Otherwise the plot felt pretty basic, maybe a cooler version of Breaking Bad (I've never seen breaking bad though so I could be wrong) but there are a ton of banger lines and thoughts and ideas packed in. There were also parts where it dragged, lots of scenes of Mario reminiscing that felt like the same thing over and over. I would still say worth the read and I might check out more from the author

I like the mix of Spanish words and phrases, though I’m not sure how much non-Spanish speakers might be able to understand some of them.
It starts sad, but then it gets really intense. It has some supernatural elements, but for the most part it's gritty and realistic, in a gory and violent way.
Overall, it was a great book.
