I enjoyed The German Wife more, but the last quarter of this book was so good. Didn't expect the ending and my heart broke.

This is one of my top five favorite WWII books. I loved the perspective of a less-affected people group during the war (they’re always about Jews, or heroes which are really important, but it was really interesting that this was not exactly either). The characters are lovable - both present day and wartime. Throughout the book I found myself re-predicting the ending and I didn’t get it right until it was revealed so it was a really great twist!

So incredibly sad but also so good. I had a tough time getting myself to read it for the first 20% because it was so sad, but then got sucked in and finished the remaining 80% in one sitting.
