Disturbing, uncomfortable, horrific. All these could be applied to the experience of reading the book, descriptions within the book, relationships in the book... Teenage girls push the intimate boundaries between friendship, obsession and love while exploring their fascinating with cosmic horror. A traumatised teacher, former victim of two students kidnapping her, kidnaps one of the teen girls to teach her a lesson. Alongside all that we get the horror of mother-daughter relationships, the cruelty of teenagers, and numerous references to the white horror of Moby Dick, among others. It's a difficult, uncomfortable novel that I won't forget in a hurry.

This didn’t disappoint in terms of being weird and unsettling but I just could not get into it. So many things too seemed to just be written in for shock value and had no means of furthering the plot at all. Idk not what I expected.

Okay that was as weird as bat shit. But it made sense in between the weirdness so that's fine.

This book confirms to me that teenage girls are, by far, the most scariest creatures on the planet. Between the patience of playing the long con and creating something they can control with just a look or a sentence?!
Ojeda wrote a compelling novel that explores the fine line that adolescence straddles between fear and desire to be liked....not to mention some horror thrown in that blurs the line of creepypastas.
Excited to check out more work by Ojeda...my book club discussion with this one was really interesting and compelling.
