I loved the opening. I thought it was so effective and clever. But then the writing after that was just stating I did that. Then we did this. And even at 20% i felt there was still not much plot.

A perfect read if you want to feel hateful
I understand Bukowski writes to be disliked but I still cannot find the appeal of his vulgar, low-level style.
Nothing happens (beside drugs, rape, Chinaski being an awful person) and you will not be able to find a deeper meaning.
Easy to read, fascinating but incredibly horrible at the same time.

Every 5 minutes I felt like strangling Chinaski, yet I couldn't put it down. As I was reading it, a part of me wanted to understand him and his broken self, but I couldn't. I kept hoping that there would be some kind of turnover in his life. I hated him and his views on women turned me off, but I was rooting from him to at least heal from something. But after Ham on Rye, Factotum, Post Office, and everything in between... I realized that this is all there is - a pervy, drunken, old man. He's not the perfect main character, in fact he's a main character you stress yourself about. He's written out to be that way. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the book. Sometimes it feels like there's no plot but I think that just goes to show how his life actually is - a drunk pervert fucking around, gambling, drinking, shitting, and sleeping. Yet, I kept turning pages after pages as I was so invested. Raw and funny (at times blood-boiling too), this book got me hooked. I liked the ending too :-).
