One of Vonnegut's more accessible works. Its writing is better than Cat's Cradle and it's less of an acid trip than Slaughterhouse V. The social commentary is still extraordinarily poignant, despite being first published over half a century ago.

Great compared to most books, but not as good as other Vonnegut books.

The fact that Vonnegut didn't seem to like the 50s much kept this very 50s-esque book from being even worse. But overall, while there were strong, clear themes, as a story it fell down a bit. Basically, 2.5 stars for being thematically interesting, an additional half a star for... kind of having a single character?

That's exactly how I felt about this book in exactly the last chapter.
Definitely far from my favorite Vonnegut book as for some reason I had a hard time really being drawn in and, well, caring about the characters. It is certainly interesting to discover a world where machines have replaced everyone but their Doctors and Engineers, well, and bartenders of course, but it gets a bit tiresome after a while reading about all those 'clicks' and 'whirs.'
However, despite my inability to fully absorb myself in the developing story of Doctor Paul Proteus, I did enjoy the quick and catchy ending that, well, flops the whole story upside down!
If you're gonna start a revolution, you either a) need to be prepared for it not to work or b) figure out what you want to do once it does. . .because if you don't, you just might find yourself in the same boat you started in!
