This book got me back into reading. It was a quick read with a plot that hooked me. Well written with strong character development and interesting twists. Definitely a recommended read.

I thought it was a unique combination between an outsider/maverick story, coming-of-age, slow-burning romance and a whodunit. It was a real page turner for me, I loved the characters and the story and wanted to know how it all ends. The story telling is non-linear which Delia Owens pulls of in a masterful way.

It was a nice read; I had a good time.

On the negative:

1. There are coincidences that are just too unlikely, e.g. when the one day of that year when Kya is in town happens also to be the day when some major piece of news is being announced.

Or how she never gets pregnant although she has sexual relationships over years but never sees a doctor. It's later [in the awful last pages, see next paragraph] hinted at the option that she might be infertile, but I found that a weak part of the storyline.

2. The last three pages or so of the book feel off. There's suddenly a time jump of 40 years or so, and some seemingly rushed explanations. It felt as if that ending hadn't been there, but the editor or publisher had insisted that Delia Owens tie up the main loose end. I might've preferred if things had stayed open or

if one of Kya's closest friends like Tate or Jumpin' had turned out as the culprit.

3. I didn't feel like there was enough depth for me to remember this book or want to re-read it. Especially with the shortcomings above.

Overall, given what a good time I had reading this, it's still 4 stars for me.

The best part of the story is hearing about Kya's collection of specimens from the marsh. I also appreciated that the book's ending was far more surprising than the movie depicted.

Does any romance author know how to write a healthy relationship? I don't care if it's the 50s, romanticizing the grooming of a vulnerable girl is fucking weird. I understand portraying racism, but the way this book treats black characters on a meta level is a bit uncomfortable too.
