Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

I never read this as a child although I was always curious about it. I recently met Judy Blume and had her sign my copy before I had a chance to read it. Of course my encounter with her was as awkward as puberty is for the PSTs. Ms. Blume seems to have grown up to be like Margaret's grandmother, which I deem to be a compliment. I still found this book relatable as an adult and even 45 years after publication. I can't wait to pass it on to my ten-year-old niece.

This is an interesting story. i have to admit, I put this on my Want-to-Read shelf because it has God on the title XD. But, it's a cute story. I'm glad to read a book about religion that isn't exactly classified as religion. And, the book doesn't focus mostly on religion. It focuses on Margaret's issues on being a preteen such as growing breasts and being interested in boys. I like it.

As for the religion part, it didn't offend me too much. I had to admit, as a Christian, there were some things that made me raise an eyebrow, but overall, it's not too bad.

But as the ending progresses, the book focuses a bit more on religion which I appreciate. When Margaret's maternal grandparents come to visit, things get ugly real quick as they scold the parents for not raising their child with a religion. They say that once you were born with that religion, you are that religion regardless, which isn't true obviously.

But, all in all, this is a good book.

I've read some of Blume's work and they're pretty fun to read. I'm glad I read this one.

This sweet coming-of-age tale still feels emotionally accurate, even despite my reading it more than fifty years after its release. It reminded me of all the palpable, urgent feelings of being a kid, craving the safety and security of family while simultaneously crawling out of my skin with impatience to grow up.

I loved Judy Blume books as a kid but never read this one – not sure why. But it was pretty fun to read now
