The concept of fighting for freedom, rights, or equality is abstract and daunting. The immensity of the concept is enough to scare most into passivity. This is a story of one such person. It's an emotional, intense, dark, and violent story with heart and humor that never loses track of the origins of the story, or the main character, Darrow  - one who acts for change not because he cannot accept the status quo but because the status quo has changed to something he could not accept. I believe the beginning of this book will resonate with many people for a long time; “I would have lived in peace, but my enemies brought me war.

An incredible start to an epic revolution of the proletariat in a beautifully stark and unequal future civilization. The voice acted version from graphic audio was breathtaking.

4.5 stars for pure entertainment. -.75 because the book seems to want to communicate a clear moral but fails to consistently state what that moral would be either structurally or in text. I've never read a book about eugenics where the author's own opinion about eugenics is this unclear.

Best book I have read in 2024 hands down.
If you're interested in dystopian, trials and tribulations, twist and turning plot give this a read.
Spoiler below:
Darrow leaves his life as a Red to fight the system, to then be thrown into a hunger games style survival of the fittest schooling that turns out to be rigged??? IM GAGED!!! The highest of Society preaches of hierarchy and rules but no one is actually playing by those rules. How is he actually going to break the chains?

One of the best opening books of a trilogy I’ve ready from the last decade. Reminiscent of Hunger Games in a Dune-esque setting

4.5

Hunger games for adults with very strong themes of class warfare.

Pros: fast-paced but manageable, accessible sci-fi with exposition woven seamlessly into the story.

Cons: The main character has a lot of plot armor. There is a lot of graphic violence and child death
