Leah on the Offbeat

This book was on my shelf since I finished Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. And that is quite a long time now. Which probably wasn't the best thing.
It was a cute YA novel, and it was well written. However, I disliked Leah so much. I thought that she and I would have a lot of things in common, but that was a hard no. I feel like even though she's bisexual, she is very close-minded and stubborn about stupid things.
I developed this habit of liking side characters the best. Abby Suso (although she plays a considerable role in the story) wasn't the main character, and yer she made this book a hundred more enjoyable for me.
Was this book great? No, this first book was superior. It just wasn't as good as Simon's story. Was it bad? Also no. There were many awesome things about it. I honestly feel like this story lacked character development on Leah's part. That annoyed the hell out of me.
This book had a ton of potential, but it never lived up to it, which is a shame. It was a quick read, and I wasn't entirely mad about it. I would've liked this novel much more if I was younger. I gave it three out of five stars on Goodreads. Nothing special, but it wasn't bad either.

I loved "Simon" & "unrequited" so much; I couldn't wait to read about Leah. perhaps my expectations were too high, but this felt trite.

Really relatable as a bi girl, although at the beginning I didn't get into it right away. Once I got used to the character it was way better, though the funny parts sometimes felt forced. The ending was very cute so it saved the entire book. Just want to say I like that she evolved even though it's a short book because it was infuriating how she always sold herself short and sabotaged everything. BTW didn't remember the original characters from the first book apart from Simon and Bram and would have appreciated a reminder of who they were.

I’ve been needing a good book. Many of my last ones have been duds. Becky Albertalli is an amazing author. I love how she manages to make every last page action packed and still wraps everything up without making it feel rushed.

As the Becky Albertalli superfan I am, I was pretty excited to start this book. It took me a while to get through but here I am. It was a pretty light read, nothing too hard to understand (except for Leah's rollercoaster moods). I was suprised with how much I came to love Abby in this book, she is amazingg. I have mixed feelings about Leah, because she gets mad for no good reason tbh, but I still like her as a main character. I personally dont see the point of the Morgan-Leah feud in this book, and I don't think it added anything to the story at all So yeah it was cute but idk about some of it

Look. There's no way that I am going to be able to objectively review this book about an awkward fat white bisexual teenage girl. Technically, the mother in this book is *younger* than I now am. But this book was totally a needed read for baby-queer past H.

I really wanted this to be a 5 stars read but oh well here we are.
Estaba tan emocionada por este libro, por su premisa de una historia de romance entre mujeres y obvio por Simon vs. que fue un libro hermoso y esperaba lo mismo de este. Pero no resultó de esta forma y es una lástima porque de verdad quería amarlo.
Lo que no me gusto.
La escena: Mi mayor problema con este libro fue la escena donde Abby decide contarle a Leah de su sexualidad. Y normalmente eso no estaría mal, el problema es como Leah reacciona. Básicamente empuja a Abby a darse una etiqueta porque según ella “no se puede ser medio bi”. Me pareció super hiriente, especialmente a una persona que no tiene claro su sexualidad como yo. Todo lo que pasa me molestó mucho y es todavía peor saber que Leah NUNCA se disculpa. Siento que fue algo súper innecesario y el libro hubiera estado perfecto sin eso.
Love triangle: Me refiero a la relación Nick/Abby/Leah. Innecesario. Innecesario. Innecesario. No sé qué más puedo decir. Quería más contenido de Abby y Leah pero toda la historia estuvo tan basada en la relación entre Nick y Abby o Leah preocupándose por herir a su amigo, y simplemente podíamos estar mejor sin todo este problema. No me gusta, no lo quería, gracias.
Leah/Garrett: Otra cosa que me pareció innecesaria. Me hubiera encantado verlos como amigos, pero tuvieron que hacerlo romántico y arruinarlo todo. No me gusto, principalmente, la forma en que Leah le da esperanzas a Garrett y NUNCA le aclara que ella no le correspondía los sentimientos. Ni siquiera hablan sobre esto al final cuando Leah y Abby se juntan, y me pareció una mala decisión por parte de la escritora.
Pero no todo estuvo mal, y este libro tiene bastantes cosas que me gustaron.
Leah y la relación con su madre: Es una de mis cosas favoritas y creo que fue muy buena representación de una familia no tradicional. La mamá de Leah es un regalo del cielo en este libro y me recordó a mi propia madre, cosa que nunca me había pasado en un libro y estoy muy feliz por esto.
Leah: Leah no es un personaje perfecto y si tengo algunos problemas con su forma de actuar pero igual la adoré. Si pudiera borrar esa única escena que arruinó todo el personaje para mí, lo haría. Tengo tantas cosas en común con ella, son tantas que me sorprendía cada vez que leía. Tantas que tuve que marcar todos los momentos que sentí que me podía relacionar con ella. Me vi reflejada en ella, especialmente me recordaba a mi misma en el colegio. Siento que la entendí más gracias a esto, entendí su forma de actuar en ciertas ocasiones, donde me imagino que muchas personas encontraron “molesto”, “grosero” o hasta “frío” de su parte.
Racismo/body positivity: Hubieron muchos mensajes importantes sobre estos temas y me pareció que fueron muy bien manejados. La escena donde Leah inmediatamente le llama la atención a su amiga por hacer un comentario racista fue genial y me creo que es muy importante que la amiga se disculpara y admitiera su privilegio como una mujer blanca en Estados Unidos y a la vez su error al hacer ese comentario.
También hubieron muchas escenas en donde Leah hablaba sobre su cuerpo de una forma positiva. Leah siempre aceptó que no tiene el cuerpo “ideal” según la sociedad pero nunca es tratado como algo malo o como parte de un “problema” en su vida. Leah está feliz con su cuerpo y se siente confiable de su belleza y fue hermoso de leer.
Abby: Es una hermosura y solo quiero saber más de ella. Estoy feliz de que hay mucho más contenido de ella y creo que es un personaje increíble.
El romance: Si, si tuve muchos problemas con cómo se formó el romance, y si admito que se sintió apurada pero me es imposible no adorar a Leah y Abby. ¡Son la cosa más linda y me dan todos los sentimientos que quiero de una pareja! Es que ME ENCANTAN.
Simon y Bram: Creo que no es necesario explicar esto, simplemente LOS AMO CON TODO MI CORAZÓN. Todos las escenas donde aparecían me encantaron y estoy muy feliz de saber como termina su parte de la historia.
Básicamente, el libro no esta completamente mal pues tiene muchas cosas rescatables. Yo esperaba más y si me siento decepcionada pero al mismo tiempo estoy muy feliz por su amplia representación y no me arrepiento de haberlo leído.
