I wouldn’t say these short stories are anything genre-defying, but if you enjoy hyper-realistic tales of motherhood then I think you might enjoy this collection too. They’re all slightly linked too, which is fun! Just a really keen look at mothers who work, who don’t, who want to get back into work, and all the frustrations, expectations and stress that goes with it. It’s not a universal collection, since all the women are middle-aged, middle class and white, but Helen Simpson is clearly writing from her own perspective and she really has nailed it (I think, anyway, despite me being 26 and child-free 😂) Thank you Jess @lunchpoems for sending this my way!

I was actually rather disappointed in this. They were more vignettes than stories - mostly working (or wishing they were working) mums reflecting on their lives as they went through an event or a day. I found myself craving incident. Glad I read it nonethelss.
