It does well at depicting escalating abuse and makes it clear why the protagonist doesn’t leave after the early warning signs, and it’s written in a conversational style that makes it a quick read. The protagonist is intentionally unsympathetic to highlight how even unsympathetic people can be victims, but that presents a challenge for the reader. At least for me, the basic sympathy for his suffering and desire for him to escape terrible abusive circumstances didn’t extend to much longer term emotional investment in him as a character in the extended aftermath.

Dark, terrifying, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. A great new story based in real world gay situations, brought to a tense and heightened reality. In some ways it really hit close to home, in other ways the world seems foreign. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Devastating in the most perfect way. Lost .75 star because it’s hard to say I enjoyed this whole book. There were many moments where I wanted to give up due to the subject matter and trauma our characters go through but I’m glad I continued as the real artistry and insight came in the last third of the book. A hard read, sure to haunt me for a while, but one I’m glad I finished.

A dark novel that carefully and thoroughly explores how the powerful can trap their victims, Yes, Daddy loses steam once it has to deal with the aftermath. The detailed horror in the first half stands stark against the sparse way the latter half explores the aftermath. A central relationship between the lead and the person his narration speaks to is also thinly drawn. Ultimately, Yes, Daddy seems far more interested in the traumatizing moments than what comes after.
