Spoiler Drizzt is without a doubt the biggest Gary Stu/Mary Sue character I have ever encountered. Everything from the very beginning was too easy for Drizzt and at several points it just became comical. Some of the most memorable parts were when he won the gauntlet fight 9 times, several of which were when he fought in the classes older than him too. The only time he lost was because his companion betrayed him. The fact that as a barely 19 year old (still a child to the drow) was so good with weapons that he was comparable to the greatest weapons master his city had ever seen, is also just hilarious. It really seemed that Drizzt had no faults, no bad characteristics. He's this idealized really good guy in a society that is wrong instead. And since women are the ones to lead in this society it's also subtly telling me that when women rule they're just going to be stuck with back stabbing and political drama.

I didn't hate this book because despite how the plot was weak and Drizzt is faultless, it was entertaining just to see how far it could be taken. I didn't particularly feel anything for any character bc there's next to no growth for anyone.

This book really can be summarized to: super good guy and his cat leave his family because he's just not like other Drow.

I’ll be honest, I’ve put off reading the Drizzt novels for so long, even as a huge D&D fan, but when I read Slaying the Dragon: The Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons and learned more about Salvatore and the craziness he endured through TSF and then WOTC, I was beyond intrigued to jump in. So, I headed over to his website to see where to start, and Mr. Salvatore himself encourages first time readers to start here, with Homeland.

And boy did it not disappoint! I mean sure, I know how cool and special Drizzt is, but reading about what made him Drizzt and the physical and emotional trauma he endured to get to the Drizzt we know and love is … well, sure sounds like a great D&D PC to me! Homeland was a brilliant read, and ohhhh my gosh I’m so in love with Zaknafein, what a DAD! I’m definitely diving into the other books as soon as I can!

It’s a very entertaining read, if a little melodramatic. I thoroughly enjoyed it though and can’t wait to read the second one!
