My husband really wanted me to read this book and I was actually pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a Western with lots of action scenes and drama, but the story was very well written. The Buckskin Line follows Rusty Shannon from his childhood abduction by the Comanches to his adult life as a Texas Ranger. I very much enjoyed all of the history included, especially in regards to the effects the Civil War had on the state of Texas. All in all a solid read.

From Award winning author Elmer Kelton comes the Buckskin Line, a coming of age story set in the Old West. Rusty Shannon believes he has lost everyone when his adoptive father, Mike Shannon is murdered in their barn. Mike rescued Rusty when he was a young boy from the Comanche raiding party that murdered his parents. Sent away from home by a preacher who hopes to prevent him from pursing revenge, Rusty joins the Texas Rangers in the duty of keeping the peace and defending the West. Caught in a time of political turmoil, Rusty befriends people with different ideologies, and learns that there isn’t always a right answer. With life-like characters and a dramatic story line, readers who join Rusty on this adventure will want to continue through the series with him. Kelton weaves an interesting story with a measured pace between action and details.

KC Rating: 3.5/5
The book was a slow, but enjoyable read. Fans of historical reads or Westerns will enjoy this easy adventure by Kelton.
