When we return to the life and world of Charles Jenkins we learn that, luckily, he has been exonerated. All should be well as the retired man focuses on his family, right? Well, that wouldn’t be much of a story. If you haven’t read book one and are looking for an edge of your seat espionage novel, start with The Eighth Sister. Then join me with The Last Agent.
When news and suspicion reach Charles, that a woman is locked up in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison he wonders if it could be Paulina Ponomayova, who we met in book one. She sacrificed herself to save him and now Charles has a debt to clear. He can’t be certain if it is her but if it is he needs to get her out.
Dugoni succeeded in once again presenting me with a spy story I could be invested in. I started as a fan of his Tracy Crosswhite series (no surprise there as it’s a crime thriller series) so when I saw The Eighth Sister I picked it up, trusting Dugoni more than the genre. If you’re like me and spy novels aren’t always your cup of tea give this series a try.
With well-written characters, fantastic plot, surprises every time you think you know what is coming and moments that will have your heart racing as if you’re the one in danger you really can’t go wrong with the Charles Jenkins series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC of The Last Agent. The book will be published on September 22nd, 2020.

Once again 60 y.o. husband, the father of two, and ex-CIA agent Charles Jenkins, with wife Alex's blessing, is headed back to Russia. Picking up where things left off in The Eighth Sister, he has some tough decisions to make. This book can be read as a standalone but is more fun when read in sequence. As a 6ft 5in tall, black man, moving around covertly in Russia is not an easy feat. Charles is not doing it for the country nor for the CIA but for the woman who saved him enabling him to come home to his family and newborn baby girl namesake.
I like the characters returning and new that help or harm along the way. The story was an adrenaline rush from start to finish. Unlike some action films and stories where some scenes are thrilling but don't seem possible, didn't have that sense with this story. No fantastical fight scenes or jumps where the characters come away scare-free.
If Hot Rod is based on a real person I bet they are a hoot to hang around. I'm looking forward to what's next for Charles and company.
I highly recommend [b:The Eighth Sister|40207839|The Eighth Sister (Charles Jenkins #1)|Robert Dugoni|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1538808531l/40207839._SY75_.jpg|62421482] Charles Jenkins, #1 as well.
Happy Reading!

I was a bit hesitant picking up this book as I wasn’t blown away by “The Eighth Sister”. I think the fact that I listened to the first on audio is why I didn’t strongly connect to the story, because reading this book was so enjoyable!I can’t wait for the next installment!

OK- I've been a Dugoni fan for a while, but now- officially hooked. Waiting for the next installment. I love the characters, the settings, the plot, the action. Sold.

I preferred this book to the first in the series - the pacing was a little more even and there was plenty of action and subterfuge. Everything you’d expect from a good spy novel. Looking forward to the third.

This is what I was expecting from [b:The Eighth Sister|40207839|The Eighth Sister (Charles Jenkins, #1)|Robert Dugoni|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1538808531l/40207839._SY75_.jpg|62421482]. This book is packed with spy action and is a great continuation from the first book. The characters are developed even further which is really nice. The only downside is that the ending just setups for more sequels.

I have read The Last Agent, the second book about Charles Jenkins by Robert Dugoni. I must thank #ThomasAndMercer and #Netgalley for providing me with this excellent espionage thriller. I was sceptical when I found out what the story was all about but Dugoni did deliver a great book and I could hardly put it down. Although I found the ending and the hint at what the next one will all be about somewhat repetitive. We will see what the future will hold for our agent. I find the author so good that I will see if I can find time to try some of his other work. I actually found that his David Sloane books are getting translated to swedish, maybe I will try one of those.
