Space academy accepts recruits from different planets throughout the solar system for the first time. Tension rises as the ‘other’ cadets infiltrate the bubble that is the rich & elites. Tensions rise as cadets train for a long over due war. Ends abruptly setting up the sequel…

GAH. I love love LOVED this book. It reminds me of the type of scifi that I adore. Give me the space academy or starship fights any day and I will DROOL. It's genuinely surprising to me that this book didn't get turned into a TV show rather than Morgan's other series. But I loved all of the characters and their backstories. Sure they got a little confusing at times but it all tied together super nicely. I cannot WAIT for the next one!

I was dubious going into this, especially with the tagline about "forbidden love". However, I am very impressed. I found the time line kind of challenging (was it a whole year, one term, etc) and then there seemed to be a few things at the school just to make the story keep going, but other than that I seriously enjoyed it.

I really connected with every one of the characters, even where I thought I wasn't really going to. (Orelia specifically.) Every single character had a personality that set them apart, and there was also a character or two who I loved to hate, which is also fun.

I found the plot fairly character driven, and I was engaged the whole time and I cared about what was going to happen next. I think it was probably quite predictable, but at the same time I didn't find myself trying to figure out the next turn... I was just along for the ride.

I adored that the LGBTQ+ relationship didn't have a heavy reliance on exploring sexuality or angst about discovering that the person was non-straight. It was just what it was. The onus was not on sexuality, it was on race. This book had excellent representation and I found the underlying theme of casual (and overt) racism very interesting. I look forward to seeing where the sequel takes this.

This was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed and I am desperate for the sequel despite the fact that this one isn't actually out yet. I'm so glad I decided to pick this up, though. It was just what I needed.

So I liked the banter… not much else because it had very juvenile writing which isn’t a bad thing, just not my thing. Also the romances were very over the top ❌

Light Years is not an excellent piece of writing. Nor are the characters memorable, or the events particularly original. But man, was it an entertaining ride! I really did have to cringe through some awful sections of prose, and some cliches, but I did enjoy myself along the way and would still recommend.

Age: 12+ with adult cross over
Warnings: No sex, but sexual tension, and I feel like subsequent books may show it. No violence really either.
