From reading this book, I was inspired by the process of creation. The characters felt real to me and I cared about what they went through.

I loved this book.  It was a fascinating blend of character and plot.  I'm not a gamer, but I found the creation of the games so interesting.

Is this book brilliant? Yes. But it also emotionally scarred me and left me so miserable halfway through that I had to put it away for over a month to gather strength to carry on.

I get why this book became so popular amongst Little Life lovers because this one is also a trauma and pain extravaganza. It starts innocent enough with two friends making games but halfway through the emotional pain starts and it only keeps getting worse and worse and worse till it became impossible for me to carry on reading. After a month-long break I came back, an apparent emotional masochist, to cry over Sam, over Sadie, over Marx, over their relationships, lack of thereof, their pain, their loneliness, their misunderstandings, their lack of communication, stubbornness, and that sheer amount of pure love that permeates every page.

The blurb is right - it is not a romance but it is story about love. It’s quite rare for books to put friendship at the forefront, with romance in the back, to show the complexities, messiness and importance of those connections that often transcend and outlast romantic relationships. Sadie and Sam’s story is epic. Often frustrating, overwhelming and contradictory but undeniably the most important connection in both their lives.

This book ripped my soul out, put my heart in the shredder and I’m saying thank you

Oh man. The best thing about this book was the game descriptions. I so wish they were real games. And while it's impossible to separate the hype at this point, I didn't really like this! I thought the characters were flat and manipulative, the plot was meandering and showy/unsubtle, and the voice (omniscient? I guess?) baffling. I connected to sweet Marx at first until the incident in the last third which felt ridiculous. This didn't work for me but I really want to play those fictional games! And ah but: That Pioneers section! I wish the whole book had been that brave. One other thought: Merrily We Roll Along but video game designers.

At various points in the book, I was astounded by the sheer skill in writing that Gabrielle Zevin has. The book is about Sam, a guarded but passionate boy, Sadie Green, a skilled and practical game designer, and Marx, the rock that they can always rely on. It's a platonic love story of the ages and these days, I wish I saw more of friendship love as this story does. The book is a masterclass in 'no detail is too small' - just about everything that's mentioned is mentioned for a reason, brought up again in a different light, for readers to laugh and weep over.
Spoiler The entire chapter from Marx's point of view as he died was as poetic and beautiful as it was heartbreaking. I finished it a week ago and it still makes me want to tear up, which is crazy because I can't remember the last time I cried because of a book.
Easy 5 stars, and actually would be incredibly fun to read and discuss with a group of people.

loved the Pioneers section—genius.

Spoiler"'Zweisamkeit' is the feeling of being alone even when you're with other people." Simon turned to look in his husband's eyes. "Before I met you, I felt this constantly. I felt it with my family, my friends, and every boyfriend I ever had. I felt it so often that I thought this was the nature of living. To be alive was to accept that you were fundamentally alone." Simon's eyes were moist. "I know I'm impossible, and I know you don't care about German words or marriage. All | can say is, I love you and thank you for marrying me anyway."

Ant raised his glass. "Zweisamkeit," he said.
