Lovely and adorable. It took me a little while to get used to reading a graphic novel as it’s my first, and it’s a different kind of book than a novel. But lovely characters, great feeling, and really took me back to high school crushes and realizing that you may not crush solely on who you expect.

“He doesn’t call me ‘mate’, though…”

I am so glad that I picked this book up as a gift to myself and decided to read it at the end of the year just to get something quickly completed. But now I NEED to go out and get the other volumes that are out. I want to read those before I watch the show on Netflix.

The pacing of this book was fast yet the relationship between Charlie & Nick was slower paced and I really enjoyed that to really see how both of them grew to like the other. Also, I don't know why I was so shocked but finding out they were British basically in the middle of the story was JARRING to me.

Because I liked it so much and felt it was so cute, I am giving it 4 stars. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series!

SpoilerCharlie’s face while Nick is explaining Rugby to him is my face when anyone explains any sport other than soccer or colorguard to me. I know nothing, please stop me brain hurt.
SpoilerTori is a mood too, and her just appearing beside Charlie and clocking Nick as not straight made me burst out laughing.
SpoilerI didn’t realize how short the book was or that it was going to end like that and I was so devastated because I also had to go to work afterwards. How dare!

What a heartfelt and wholesome story! Heartstopper: Volume One is a great introduction to the series. Nick and Charlie are equally endearing, and their developing relationship has been handled beautifully by the author. Alice Oseman has also used this opportunity to discuss an array of important topics throughout the series, exploring school bullying, sexuality, friendship, anorexia nervosa, among others.

The artwork took a bit of getting used to on my part, yet it pairs nicely with the story. The illustrations also help move the story along and add an additional layer of emotion.

I now know why everyone is raving about this series! Not only will this story entertain you, but it will educate you in subtle ways as well. I am glad these books exist in the world today, not only are they entertaining but the series explores a wide range of topics facing teenagers in the world today. Overall, a brilliant first book, that ends on a cliffhanger making me want to get to Volume 2 asap.
