This is an interesting exploration of what humans would do when all they have to do is survive, made more unique by the fact the story is about a group of young boys. I enjoyed the world-building and descriptions of the island - the words created such vivid visuals. The characters fell a little flat to me, though, and I felt that there was so much more to explore between characters. Overall, I can see why this is a book often included in school curriculums, but I'd love to see it replaced or paired with something that has more nuance to the characters and more diversity.
