It's always interesting seeing how writers handle the concept of immortality--its benefits, pitfalls, and ultimately, its curse. Zdarsky is a great thematic and character writer, and while that does come through here, the focus is definitely on the plot more than the characters. In a town where no one dies, protective measures can become stifling and even the well-intentioned can find themselves becoming villains as conflicts arise and questions of power are decided. Perez, Spicer, and Wooton make for a strong team on visuals, and Vol. 1 here sets up a lot of threads that promise to lead to interesting conflicts to come.

I read the first two issues in this collection and thought "Well, that's a lot of background, and the conceit is interesting...."

I read the third issue in this collection and thought "Okay, Zdarsky has clearly thought out the implications of the conceit; I'm a little invested in what's going on..."

I read the fourth and fifth issues and and thought "Holy s#!@. This is great!"

There are some weak points (primarily in how the conceit of Stillwater is hidden and the nature of the villains), but I just felt so carried along by the writing and art that those were at most minor quibbles.

Interesting concept, not being able to die. The Galen reveal is pretty great.

Lots of really cool ways that this interesting concept plays out. I mean, I HATE the main character and the marines (who doesn’t hate marines?!), but I. Any wait for volume two!
