Honestly this was a fast read but it felt surface level compared to the plot and it’s potential. I like books with no plot but this didn’t do it for me.

I thought Emma Cline's The Girls was very well written, however, for myself personally it was a bit dark. I had known it was about a young girl that gets wrapped up in a cult. I just did not expect the descriptions of the events that lead to her leaving the cult would be so graphic. Also, the interactions with the leader and her obsession with another girl in the cult were a bit too steamy for my liking. I suppose you can chalk it up to a matter of personal taste. I do believe that the author told the story well. A reader could connect with the protagonist as well as some of the supporting characters in their hurts and hang ups. It was a wonderful portrait of human emotions and why we allow them to color our decision making at the most critical times in our lives.

Good writing just not my cup of tea. Saw this at B&N and bought it after reading the back synopsis- which sounded wild and amazing, but left me a little disappointed. I personally would’ve enjoyed it more if the story was unfolding in the present instead of Evie reflecting on her life as a middle-aged woman.
