"A remarkable number of books for infants tell an almost identical story: of a farmyard [...] In most cases, there is one cow, one pig, one horse, one chicken, one dog and one cat, living together as if they were a family. There is of course no hint of why animals might be kept on a farm, what happens to them in life, or how and why they die. At the very dawning of consciousness, we learn that the livestock farm is a place of comfort and safety, a harmonious world removed from stress and conflict".

It starts slow, so stick with it, or skip ahead. It picks up by Chapter 3 where he finally gets into sizing the problem and then builds towards a crescendo of incredulity at how poorly governments have mismanaged the global food system. He busts all the myths of modern farming from free-range to buy local and even puts forth a fascinating argument about why farming has become so sacred and untouchable. Highly recommend reading to find out how our food system works or really doesn't work and is in a precarious state.
