This is by far my favorite Night World book. The plot isn't really anything great, but all of the characters. from Ash's sisters to Mary-Lynnette and Ash himself, definitely make up for it. Despite the lack of interactions and scenes between these two, Mary-Lynnette and Ash are my favorite soulmate couple.

This was cute too. I want to literally punch Jade in her face for being too stupid to know that putting kittens in a suitcase would kill them. Mark is an actual idiot. I like Mary Lynette though. I like that she has a hobby—astronomy is bad ass. I also like that she changed her mind about becoming a vampire and Ash was totally chill about it. I like that he was willing to let her grow on her own and decide for herself if she wanted to be with him. (I just read ACOTAR so I’m used to reading all alpha males ugh)

Mary-Lynette and her brother, Mark, are used to feeling somewhat different to those around them. She is obsessed with star-gazing and he is desperately shy. It’s entirely understandable that they will be curious to see the new arrivals to their quiet town.
What we see is nothing like you might imagine. Their quiet elderly neighbour has told them her three nieces will come and visit. Their arrival to town is memorable, and of course Mary-Lynette’s curiosity knows no bounds.
Before we know it the girls have settled into their new home, having made the shocking discovery of their aunt’s body. Unfortunately, it seems someone is hunting them so they have to come up with a plan.
As with Secret Vampire everything happens very very quickly. The conflict between the human world and that of the Night World is, again, in evidence. What was interesting in this one was the attempt to develop the character of Ash a little more than we’d had previously.

It's hard to explain. If I take a step back and look at what the different elements of the book are, I should like it, but I don't. The only reason I finished reading it was because I have it as an audiobook.

Doesn't feel like its from 19 years ago, its older than me!
I was surprised at first, I thought this would be the sequel to 'Secret Vampire' but noooo... However it does connect back to the first book where we get to follow the Redfern's, Ash and his three runaway sisters Jade, Rowan and Kestrel, who is seeking refuge at their aunt Opal's house. We also meet Mary-Lynette, a name that kind of bothered me with its length and out of fashion touch, and her pessimistic younger brother with a tendency to believe that everything has a supernatural explanation, until he is faced with the supernatural.

The whole story is revolving around aunt Opal's murder, who could have done it? Drawn into this mess of mystery and danger, they find love and new sides of the same coin. People you thought you knew change over night, the world you felt safe in start to shake and in the end you can't even believe in yourself, because even you change over night.

My favorite character was definitely Ash, covered in his own self-worth and tendency for evil he is faced by the very thing he despised, the very thing he had tried to destroy for someone else, one word, karma. I like the way he tries to do the right thing by bringing his sister's home, not only for the sake of saving the family honor, also because he doesn't want them to end up dead. When the news hits him about aunt Opal he is genuinely sad, there are moments of affection but since no one expects him to be better, everyone wants him to be the alpha he doesn't have to change. Until he realizes that an alpha always needs an female alpha.

My favorite quote: "Fun - oh, no," Rowan said, dismayed. Jade knew she had caught part of Vic's thought and was trying very hard not to pry further. "Kestrel and Jade are much to young for anything like that. I'm sorry, but we have to say no."
