Horrifying, fascinating, this book provides important lessons for this present dangerous age.

I am split on this book, but ultimately gave it 4 stars. The book in total is 712 pages and just so much to read. It covers literally everything from January 1933-September 1939 e.g. the economy, social programs, persecution of musicians, persecutions of artists, persecution of film makers, life of men, life of women, life of children, life of Jews, life of gypsies, the economy again. It just goes on and on and on. It can be an extremely sluggish read at times, at others you breeze through it.

You cannot argue the thoroughness of this book. You could teach an entire semester college course with this book as the entire syllabus (although that would not be proposer historic work), and I do admire this aspect of the book tremendously. This book and the series as a whole is basically what got Richard Evans his Knighthood. On the other hand, there is probably several subjects in here which the average reader probably does not care much about. It is highly unlikely that a single reader will enjoy reading about every subject in this book just because it covers so much. However, Evans covers everything in the book equally well and I don’t think a single section should be cut due to lack of importance. I just ended up skipping sections I didn’t care about, such as the persecution of musicians

Ultimately it could be a more fun book to read, but it is the most comprehensive book I have ever read, so you have to give it credit for that. If it was more fun to read, i would have given it 5 stars.

Also he translates all of the German organizations and words to English, which I do not really think he should do because most other people use the German ones. I think this was an effort to be an entry level book, which he describes in the prologue. I do not think this book is really entry level though because there were times when I had no idea what was going on or how things were connected and I feel like I know more than the average reader on these topics.

A thorough and fascinating window into how exactly the Nazis harnessed power in every corner of German society, and gradually, foreign society too.

Great book, very very well written

Not very entertaining, but that's not the point of the book. At times it felt like something was wrong with me for subjecting myself to this 40 hour plus history lecture but it was worth it. I would love to have physical copies of the trilogy to use as reference material.

Excellent. Don't know what else to say. It's what the title says. It's organized by topic. Which means I was surprised when certain topics were not mentioned. But, they were discussed in other chapters.
