I think the best part of Miss Stanhope’s writing is the way that she is always able to brings scenes and characters to life. From the very first page onward, we’re drawn into the world with the author’s brilliant storytelling. Alice is a formidable witch, and I loved the way that she walks the line between good and evil to do what’s right. It’s not very often that you read about a witch who uses both white and black magic to accomplish her goals. The adventure she goes on with her vampire friend added a cute little romantic undertone to this otherwise dark and powerful journey. Fantastic work as always!

So dark, and yet holding onto the light -- just like Alice. What I love about this series is the creatures are not just witches, vampires and werewolves in name only, prancing around with human emotions. They are dark entities and behave accordingly with no remorse. The story is dark, so be prepared. Yet, there is also the light that shines through -- due to love for Alice. It's such a great contrast of good vs evil, allowing both to reside in everyone involved without making anyone fit into a classification of either dark or light. I love that Alice struggles with her desire not to kill, yet will do what her soul calls out for her to do. She changes, yet remains who she is. Great storytelling all around. You'll want to start with book one to get the full story, even though you can read this one by itself.
