I think it has been too long since I read Matched! I have forgotten some of the details and Crossed just jumps right into the narrative with little overture. So far, I am underwhelmed and a bit confused 2/3's of the way in... Unfortunately, now that I have finished Crossed, I find that there is nothing to amend in my early review. I am thoroughly disappointed in Crossed and have little to say to recommend it. The narrative is long and told in alternating voices, which, I must admit, I did not realize straight away! I generally don't look at chapter headings but once I started running into to some contradictory information I figured it out. The problem, as expressed by other reviewers, is that the voices are virtually indistinct. The narrative is plodding and lacks a sense of any real threat or intensity that was evident in the first novel. Even the romantic tension is tepid at best. The characters are underdeveloped and uninteresting. And the Rising? Pretty lame rebellion if you ask me. I don't even know what they are rebelling against or for! The Society has evil machinations and the lives of its citizens are pawns in their hands, but who exactly are they anyway??? Who is in charge? How does the rebel group hope to bring them down? Who are the rebels? How did the group get started? Why does Cassia suddenly do a 180 and decide that it's not love she was searching for in the canyon but a greater sense of purpose and destiny?? Lots of pointless and uninteresting philosophical waxing and waning over landscape, poetry, and the meaning of love. BORING.

So I absolutely hated match (gave it one star) but I did actually enjoy this one more. Xander's secret made me want to read more and tugged me along even though it did get boring sometimes. I'm glad I gave the series another chance and am looking forward to reading Reached to see what happens with the Rising.

My daughter again read it-
EVEN BETTER THAN MATCHED!!!!!!! I can't believe Cassia through away a chance to have a perfect life with Xander, risk everything (including her life), to be with Ky. She risks her life, because she thinks she can be with Ky forever once she finds him, but only a few days after they reunite, they are separated AGAIN. I feel so bad for Cassia, she leaves the society to be with Ky, they get separated again, and she's back where she started, in the society with nothing but the archivists to give her information about Ky.

Definitely liked this one better than the first book. I don't know how much of this is because I listened to the (very annoying) audio for book one, whereas I read the actual book this time around.
This one seemed to move along faster and involved more intrigue. I'll definitely read book 3, and I wasn't even sure I'd pick up book 2 when the first one was done.
