I gave this a 3.5 originally, but I can't even remember how it ended. I basically remember nothing about the last half of this book. So, it's gotten demoted to a 2.

Nothing special. My main comment is that the narrator tries to convince you she's this cold, unfeeling person, but she's got a lot of emotions for someone who supposedly doesn't care. Maybe she's just trying to convince herself, because I wasn't fooled. The reader for this audio tried to convey the cold characterization, but it just comes across as monotone or disdainful. It doesn't work. It could be an interesting book if you're obsessed with lightning strikes, but that's just a plot device in the novel.

I love Alice Hoffman and I devoured this book but if I took a shot every time she mentioned New Jersey (where the main character is from but where only about 25% of the story takes place) I'd be dead of alcohol poisoning. It was weird and took me out of the story, because it was almost always an unnecessary add-on. I wasn't crazy about the resolution of one storyline, I won't spoil it but ouch.

I really love the way Alice Hoffman writes, especially in this book It's so much more about the moments and thoughts and ideas of things rather then factual evidence and information...she's one of my favorite writers. I also love how she uses magical realism in most of her work, and anything with magical realism i love.
