The Marketplace, by Laura Antoniou

I have been thoroughly bamboozled.

Totally related to Brian and Sharon in the first portion of the novel as they felt they had been absolutely defrauded lol. They came for the sexy and the sensual but were confronted with repetitive boring manual labour! Unlike them though I decided to pack up and leave.

This must be the least erotic read about the BDSM lifestyle ever. Actually, I would argue this is less about BDSM than it is about Master/Slave relationships. And even then, it's not the kinky roleplay but a relationship that aims for actual M/S dynamics and lifestyle (meaning total obedience, actual menial work etc). That’s a no from me…

Most of the stuff is just boring to be honest; which is a pity since a lot of small scenes are actually quite good and speak of the potential that was there. I also loved the fact that there was a variety of sexualities equally represented since, normally, erotic fiction is either exclusively M/M OR W/W OR heterosexual. Having an exploration of how the different kinds of sexualities experience BDSM would have been really interesting but oh well.

I'm sure this must appeal to a number of people but it doesn't do anything for me. To be honest, I'm sure I would have had more fun with the "weekend masters" the book seemed to deride so much.

Maybe I'll give it another shot later? It was not bad per se, just unsexy lol...

I just wrote "If this is your sort of book you've probably already read it" in another review and I think that's also true here. On the offchance you're just discovering the series, welcome to the only BDSM novel I've ever read that felt thought-through.

It doesn't suffer from purple prose and Laura Antoniou knows just what to leave to the imagination.

It's a lot of fun. If you can, get the audiobook from Audible.com as their reader is first rate.

I just couldn't get into this story. The characters are all a pain in the ass. I wanted to see them all go to hell. I went about halfway through before I called it quits. There are just too many other books out there that I'm dying to read to waste more time on this. I even stopped and read my "must read" books and then tried to come back. Still couldn't get into the story.

I enjoyed this book very much! I love how well the characters and their histories are laid out. It is very nice to really get inside their heads and see what's going on. Even though I was only aiming for two chapters a night, I finished this book in less than a week. Once I got to part two, I just couldn't keep my hands off of it.

If you like the structure of The Story of O you might like this book. I didn't.

The Marketplace is a product of the kink community so it's way better than most of the books out there on this subject.

Loved the book, cant wait to read the next one.
I have to say overall I loved the characters Chris and....Robert.
Just how they're presented is interesting and you see all different sides to them.
Very well thought out characters.

Extremely well written, managing to actually balance having a plot and character development, without the usual jarring "I'm going to put a sexy scene in here, now" disconnect that one often gets in erotica.

Outside of the glaring typos and grammatical errors that I thought would have been caught by this edition, it is an enjoyable read with good pacing and human characters. Some of today's readers may find it a bit dated, with reference to technology level and naivete of some of the characters, whilst others may have more trouble with some of the heavier sex scenes, though sex is not focal point of the story.

Looking forward to what the other books have in store.
