Rereading this is fun, but it’s way more stressful than I remembered. The plot unfolds in a believable way, but it’s crazy how long it takes Tally to confess. The naivety theme is very strong, which is interesting to look back on from an older age demographic.

Dystopian fiction still hits. This book was solid and from what I can remember, the series only gets better.

This was a favorite of mine when I was in middle school and the reread left me pretty captivated. Interesting take on beauty and society and intriguing villains and heroes.

Rereading this as an adult with my high school students, I noticed a lot of tropes I've come to really dislike among YA novels
"special girl" Tally instead of writing Shay as a more important character
fridging Shay by having her have the surgery against her will really did her dirty

If 30 year old me loved this book, I can’t imagine how much 15 year old me would have adored it!
Really interesting concept that took a minute to get into but once I was there I flew through this.
Only thing I didn’t love is that I there isn’t an ‘end’, it just seems to flow straight into the next book.

I read this series in HS and now a decade later am re-reading. I still really enjoyed this storyline, but it did feel a little adolescent and slow at first.
