This and the first volume were excellent set-up novels for what's coming in the final trilogy of the epic. It was a nice change of pace to follow some of the high-powered characters rather than flipping back and forth between magicians and country-bumpkins turned soldiers. With the previous trilogy and continuing into this two-book sub-series, I thought Feist was very much back in top form as a writer and storyteller. Wonderfully epic moments combined with more personal ones are what Feist does best and he did so again with the Demonwar books.

Review:
Great continuation of the Demonwar Saga. In this book, which I think takes place about one year after "Rides a Dread Legion", an agent of Pug's Conclave of the Shadows, Jim Dasher, stumbles upon the remnants of a horrific and bloody ritual used to summon demons. Reporting his finding back to the Conclave, Pug, Magnus, Amirantha, Sandreena, Gulamendis, Laromendis and others continue their search into the archives of the past to try and find out exactly what is happening in the Demon Realm. Their discovery proves to even the most learned Demon Masters that the Demon realms organization was far more brutal than what they could have ever suspected. With a little help from an ancient demon text and Pug's grandfather, the Conclave is able to discover where the rift to the Demon Realm lies. However once there, Amirantha's worst suspicions come true, not only is Belasco behind the newly attempted demon invasion of Midkemia, but he has actually allowed a demon to gain partial control over his body. The final battle ensures the power hungry demon's ability to infiltrate Midkemia is delayed, but more is yet to come. This book is a great read, quick paced, engaging, with some pretty witty dialogue.

I've read all of Feist's books and enjoy each one, some are better than other but all are enjoyable.

I liked the multiple stories during the first half of the book and how they intertwined towards the end.

I will hopefully finish this huge series by February!

Happy reading

Dreadful - I'll admit that I actually stopped reading this book a bit less than halfway through. If Magician had been this bad, Feist would never have been published. Magician still rates in my top one or two fantasy books of all time, and prior to this, I've read all of Feist's work. Barring some sort of spectacular return to form, however, I believe this book marks the last work by Feist that I'll read.

On the Cusp

While this book finished a battle and challenges, it really seems just the prelude for the final trilogy. Don’t get be wrong - I love it - but it leaves you knowing the real war awaits. I think it is a worthy launchpad to the final trilogy of the Cycle.

Getting closer and closer to the end of this long series that spans over generations of time. A huge world that is amazingly built over the many books. Some great characters and some not so great too. In this set there were some good characters but this book I just couldn't get into the way I have some others in the series. I don't know if it's that I just don't want to attach to characters any longer after so many that I have loved that are long gone in the time line or something else.

Reminicent of the fantasy novels I used to flip through as a child, while I was hiding in the library. It's pulpy and makes me want to roll some dice.
