a MALE author graphically writing about the sexual abuse of a 14 year old girl is very strange to me. the way he writes about this CHILD’S body is actually disgusting (
the end of chapter one and the period scene wtf????)

i’m shocked by the amount of positive reviews for this book

This book was complicated for me to rate. On the one hand, the prose and characterizations are deeply gripping, lush, tangled, and vital. On the other, there were elements of repetition that were just a little too much, straying from illustrating Turtle's life and into something perhaps a little too dear to the author. The characters were rich but also felt a little hard to believe for their ages. But more than any of that, this book was viscerally uncomfortable. There were times when I thought, "Am I participating in something too voyeuristic and sadistic by reading this?" The unflinching depictions of abuse and its physical, emotional, and developmental ramifications were so deeply felt that I felt like an intruder for reading them. This is a tangled, beautiful, twisted read. It is not perfect, and I'm not fully convinced by its ending, but it is powerfully imagined.

This book definitely needs trigger warnings. Very difficult to read at times, but also very powerful.

Perhaps the most deeply disturbing book I’ve ever read. This book has extremely graphic descriptions of violence and cruelty and I had to skip ahead at times to avoid some of them. I am relieved to be finished with the book. It’s well-written but I’m not convinced that all of the scenes and disturbing imagery were necessary, and I wonder if this detracted from the impact.
