This is a good old John Grisham book and I love that I can depend on him to deliver :) I teeter between 3 and 4 stars! On the one had you have the mafia, who controls and runs all the bars and strip joints in the area (that also have secret stuff going on). On the other hand you have man becoming a DA trying to clean up that area. They have a connection! Law, justice, murder, you name it!

The book was so full of information.
It could've easily been a good trilogy.

We're talking a time span of 40+ years here.

The backstory is great and you feel like you know what's happening most of the time.
Really gets you involved but the "main plot" (as it reads on the Backcover) doesn't start until about 3/4 of the book in.
And then it's a page Turner.

However, I read the first 3/4 and then audiobook was the way to go.

Sometimes there was just too much stuff happening that I didn't care about

Nostalgia influenced this book choice as I used to read everything Grisham wrote.  The expansive, multi-generational story offered more than the expected twists and turns of the old-school Grisham. The setting is practically a character here, and that focus on time and place added an unexpected dimension to the plot.
