A very tense play to read. It gives a look into 1950s society in the US (specifically the play is set in New Orleans) and the extreme pressure put on women to marry and present themselves in a “proper manner”. Reading this made me incredibly happy to have not been born in past generations where women are treated as punching bags for their husbands and treated as if they are worthless if they cannot attain and keep a husband. Although Blanch was seeping into madness, I felt that it was kind of understandable with the pressure she was being put under to find a gentleman. I wish Stella had run away from Stanley with Blanch, I would be furious if I saw my sister’s husband beat her and try to save her as well. I think Stanley definitely progressed Blanch’s madness with his toxic “manliness” and abuse towards his and his friends abuse towards their wives. Not to mention the horrific sexual assault he did to Blanch (making him also someone who cheated on his pregnant wife). If the sisters had run away they could have possibly found a calm life safe from abuse for Stella and her baby, and safe from societal pressures for Blanch.
The play was well written and full of tension. It really makes you feel the emotions as a reader, I imagine actually watching the play is even more powerful. I just cannot see how people who read it side with Stanley, as it seems the play intends. Which is the reason I rated lower.
